How to stay cool when Summer Camping

Staying cool during summer camping is crucial for your comfort and safety. Here are some tips to help you beat the heat while enjoying your camping experience:

  1. Choose the Right Campsite: Opt for a campsite that provides shade, such as under trees or near natural barriers like rocks. This can significantly reduce direct sun exposure and help keep your camping area cooler.

  2. Time Your Activities: Engage in more strenuous activities like hiking and exploring during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon. Rest and relax during the hottest hours to avoid excessive heat exposure.

  3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Carry a reusable water bottle and consider adding electrolyte-rich drinks to replenish lost minerals through sweating.

  4. Wear Appropriate Clothing: Opt for lightweight, breathable, and light-colored clothing that reflects the sun's rays. Loose-fitting clothes allow air circulation and help keep you cool.

  5. Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Sunburn can make you feel hotter and more uncomfortable.

  6. Wear a Wide-Brimmed Hat: A wide-brimmed hat provides shade for your face, neck, and shoulders, keeping you cooler and helping to prevent sunburn.

  7. Use Cooling Accessories: Consider using cooling towels, bandanas, or neck gaiters that can be soaked in water and worn around your neck to help regulate body temperature.

  8. Set Up a Shade Structure: Bring along a portable shade structure like a canopy or tarp to create additional shaded areas at your campsite. This can be a great place to relax during the hottest hours.

  9. Cool Off with Water: Take advantage of nearby water sources for swimming, wading, or splashing. If there's no natural water source, consider bringing a small inflatable pool or water misting system.

  10. Use Proper Insulation: Insulate your tent by using reflective tarps or heat-reflective blankets on the outside. This can help keep the interior cooler by reflecting sunlight.

  11. Ventilate Your Tent: Keep your tent well-ventilated by opening windows and using mesh panels if your tent has them. This allows air to circulate and reduces the buildup of heat inside.

  12. Elevate Your Sleeping Area: If possible, set up your sleeping area on a slightly elevated surface. Hot air rises, so this can help you catch cooler breezes.

  13. Sleep Comfortably: Use a lightweight, breathable sleeping bag appropriate for warm weather. You might also consider sleeping in a hammock for better airflow.

  14. Limit Cooking in the Heat: Cook simple, no-cook meals to avoid generating additional heat from stoves or campfires. Opt for cold snacks, sandwiches, salads, and fruits.

  15. Use Cooling Fans: Battery-operated or solar-powered fans can provide some relief from the heat inside your tent.

  16. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts, heat advisories, and other local alerts to ensure your safety during extreme heat conditions.

Remember that staying cool and hydrated is essential for your well-being during summer camping. By following these tips and being prepared, you can enjoy your camping adventure while minimizing the discomfort of high temperatures.

Pack the tent during the day

Walking into a tent that has been in the sun for a day is like walking into a sauna. Because the tent absorbs the scorching sun and stores heat, it will increase the Temperature inside the Tent.

So put away the tent during the day and set it up again after the sun goes down.

There are two advantages to doing this:

  • Keep the tent cool

Reduce the damage to the fabric caused by direct sunlight and prolong the service life of the tent.

  • The use of Tree shade

Setting up a tent in the tree shade is also a great way to keep cool while camping. The trees will replace the tent, absorbing most of the hot light, and making the tent cooler.

A campsite that shrouds your tent in the shade from every angle is perfect, even during the day without you having to pack your tent.

How to Choose Your Backpacking & Camping Tents

Trap

Trap is one of the best for staying cool while camping. It will reflect sunlight into the sky, keeping the tent cool.

Note: The trap needs to be set up above the tent, and at least 30 cm away from the tent to keep the air flowing between the two, this kind of shading effect is the best.

A reflective trap can be used, or a trap can be used to hold the tent above the tent with drawstrings and trees.

How to Choose a Tarp in Summer?

The use of wind

To use wind to keep you cool when camping in summer. A tent with large mesh doors and windows allows the wind to pass through and cools it down easily.

Therefore, when setting up a tent, first determine the wind direction, and then face the tent door to the wind.

Tip for determining the direction of the wind: Wet your finger and hold it up, the cooler side indicates the direction of the wind.

Open the outer layer of the tent

After sleep at night, the heat, moisture, and moisture generated by the human body will float upward and condense on the inner wall of the outer tent, making the inside of the tent sultry.

So if the weather is sunny without rain, the outer layer of the tent can be opened to release the heat. But don't completely remove the outer layer either, in case unexpected rain occurs.

Choose a tent with a large area of gauze

The tent's fine gauze mesh keeps insects out while allowing breezes to pass through, giving you the best of both worlds. So it is advantageous to choose such a tent when camping in summer.

Hammock Camping

How to Choose a Hammock?

If you have a hammock to sleep in, try hammock camping in the summer to allow for air circulation and great views.

Note: Please make sure that your hammock is suitable for a long sleep, not an ordinary leisure hammock; build a waterproof tarpaulin above the hammock to prevent dew and heavy rain; set up anti-mosquito gauze around the hammock to avoid mosquito bites.

Drink plenty of water

Water is a good coolant and has a high specific heat capacity. For the same mass of material, water absorbs more heat by 1 degree, so keeping your body well hydrated while camping is a good way to stay cool.

Light-colored clothing

Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight, while dark clothing absorbs it, so choose to wear light-colored and quick-drying clothing when camping, loose and breathable, and covers more of the skin, while applying sunscreen to keep your body cool.

Cold water bags

Bring a few extra bottles of frozen water and put them in the bottom of the sleeping bag at night (packed in a waterproof bag to moisten the sleeping bag with water vapor) to cool your body and make it easier to fall asleep.

It can also be used in place of frozen water if a cool stream or a cooler tap water source is nearby.
